  • We aim for all children to develop confidence, competence and a high level of achievement in handling numbers and measures. This requires a practical understanding of the ways in which information is gathered by counting and measuring.
  •  All children are encouraged to use and apply mathematics in real–life situations and
  • investigative work. In this way children will become accustomed to working independently of the teacher, to generating a mathematical enquiry and to thinking how to communicate their findings.
  •  The children will make use of calculators and computers, using them to collect data, check answers, help with problems, play games and solve complex calculations.
  • During the Foundation Stage all mathematics lessons will be of a practical nature with very little written recording of results - children will be encouraged to talk about how they carried out the activity. This should also be the emphasis at home where, we hope, your child will be encouraged to take part in counting activities, guessing the next number in a sequence, shopping, looking at shapes etc.
  • For all other children, the daily maths lesson will provide them with opportunities to practise and consolidate their mental activities and develop their knowledge and understanding of number, measurement, geometry and statistics
  • We encourage help at home with the learning of number facts, for example 7+6, 17+6, 27+6 and multiplication tables.
