Children in years 1—6 undertake a daily literacy lesson, which may contain the following:
- Whole class — shared reading or writing
- Teaching of phonics, spelling or grammar
- Group reading or writing — Independent work practising skills previously taught
- Plenary session to discuss learning
- Setting homework
We place great importance on the development of language skills throughout the whole curriculum, aiming to achieve a balance between speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Parents of those children who experience difficulty with any aspect of Literacy will be invited to discuss how to support their child. Usually this will involve developing an individual plan in line with our special educational needs policy - it may include extra practice in school, use of different materials and possible referral to an Educational Psychologist and / or a Speech and Language Consultant.
