Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Welcome to Springwood Heath Primary School's Early Years Foundation Stage.

We are made up of one Reception Class and we share our space with Owls Class, one of our pre-formal classes. You can find out more information about the pre-formal curriculum here;

Pre-Formal Pathway

EYFS Intent

At Springwood Heath we are an inclusive primary school and aspire for all children to make progress across the curriculum. We deliver a high quality early years curriculum for all children who attend our school.

We have high expectations for our children. We believe all children deserve to have an equal chance of success. In order to achieve this, our early years curriculum is designed to equip children with opportunities to explore, investigate and wonder.

High-quality teaching enables children to extend their knowledge, understanding, skills and abilities in a safe and secure learning environment.

Children learn through first-hand, stimulating experiences and are taught explicitly across all seven areas of learning, which include three prime areas and four specific areas.

EYFS Implementation

In our Reception Class we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory guidance and a specifically designed curriculum for the children at Springwood Heath.

Our curriculum is based on the seven areas of learning outlined in the EYFS.

Alongside our EYFS curriculum we teach Read Write Inc Phonics, this is a huge priority for us in early years as we believe reading gives our children access to a broad and balanced curriculum. We also use Literacy Counts "Ready Steady Write" to support the development of writing and NCETM Mastering Number to support the understanding of early number.

EYFS Impact

We measure the impact of our curriculum through a continuous assessment cycle. This is completed by all EYFS staff in a variety of ways.

We use the National Baseline Assessment and a robust transition process to gain information on our children's starting points, from this information we plan and deliver a varied curriculum as demonstrated in the documents below.

Children are observed in times of independent application by staff members, this is documented using the Tapestry App. Children are also assessed in Phonics using the Read Write Inc online assessment, this happens every six weeks and progress is usually rapid in this area.

School based assessments are recorded three times a year and at the end of the Reception the EYFS Lead completes an EYFSP (profile) of each child, this informs parents, school and the local authority if children have met the end of phase Early Learning Goals.
